Deoxycholic Acid Injections "The Fat Blaster"
It's an interesting phenomenon that I see every day when evaluating patients and talking to them about their goals when it comes to facial rejuvenation. I could be talking to the most beautiful person in the world, but the second I hand them a mirror, their eyes travel immediately to their area of perceived flaw even before I ask them, "Tell me what you see when you look in the mirror?" No one ever leads with, "Well, this is what I like about myself…"
We are our own harshest critics.
My motivation for pursuing aesthetics was to help people build confidence and help them feel amazing in their own skin by performing medical procedures that don't require invasive intervention or plastic surgery! I want my patients to look in the mirror and immediately smile because they feel good about what they see!
Whole-body Rejuvenation Solution - The Fat Blaster Shot
Some of our perceived flaws are south of the chin line. To help you tackle those unwanted stubborn bulges, I now offer deoxycholic acid injections - also known as the "fat blaster" shot and Lipodissolve! It works by dissolving the fat cells in those stubborn areas of your body that cause unwanted fat deposits. So many questions, so let's dive in.
How does it work?
Deoxycholic acid is a bile acid that dissolves the fat cells. Your body then metabolizes the dissolved cells and disposes of them in your gut.
What is the recovery time?
There is usually some mild pain and swelling at the injection site, but downtime is minimal. You can resume your normal activities in 24-48 hours.
What are the side effect
The most common side effect is injection site pain and swelling, which resolves in a few days. Some swelling may persist for several weeks, but this is less common. You can get some discoloration of the skin, which also resolves after a few days. You can have localized hair loss at the injection site. Some patients report trouble swallowing if injected into the chin area, but this is related to post-injection swelling and resolves as the swelling goes down.
What areas can you treat with this?
How many treatments will I require?
Treatments are spaced out every 4-6 weeks and number of treatments needed varies by patient. Depending on the treatment area and individual response, it may require anywhere from 2-6 treatments.
Are there patients that would not be good candidates for this treatment?
Any patients with open wounds or prone to developing skin infections should not consider this procedure. While not an absolute contraindication, patients on blood thinners or patients with multiple chronic medical conditions, including diabetes, should proceed with care as the risk for complications is higher. Patients with significant weight fluctuations will also want to wait until they are at a consistent weight that they feel confident they can maintain. The fat cells are permanently destroyed, so if you gain a significant amount of weight, fat deposition and distribution may be affected.
